I think the crux of this ruling needs to be a demonstration of parity and fairness. If you want to use a ship that isn't in the 2010 compendium, or endorsed within the current specialist arms forum, then please post their stats within this forum or a separate thread, with some explanation of how you see them fitting into the fluff and general balance of the game. This will mean that you can experiment with new and exotic designs, which I think is quite in keeping with the lore, but also gives everyone a chance to see what they will be up against. I would prefer it if currently accepted designs were used so 2010 is to be the norm, but other ships are acceptable as long as you can demonstrate their fairness (as far as possible) and also post their stats openly within this forum. Is everyone content with this?

That seems pretty reasonable I think. It should hopefully be fairly clear whether additional ships are balanced or broken as anything! :D

Awesome ruling Dave; the 2x Dark Eldar ships types that I was hoping to use are endorsed on the Specialist Game forum, so that gets a thumbs up from me in terms of applying a huge amount of common sense (I can hardly see a few light Succubus cruisers and when we escalate to 1500pts <and beyond> a single Mortalitas Class Battlecruiser 'wrecking' games).

Finally finished painting my first complete ship:

I think I could do with a slightly brighter silver to emphasise the weapons a bit more, but overall I'm very happy with the grey/blue colour scheme. And adding bands of colour on e.g. dorsal/ventral fins also gives me a tiny bit of leeway to individualise within the fleet.

Very nice! I have my Imperial ships with the same blue/gold combo, it works so well on the models

Hello all. How is everyone getting on with building and prepping the fleets? I've been a little delayed by work and other niffnaff and trivia. How hungry is everyone to get started? I thought I might give you all a bit of extra time and compensate by organising a kick-off story based BFG event to get us all together and put a hard deadline on completing your preps? I can then unveil the maps etc and really introduce you all to the setting at the same time. Everyone interested? Stu, could we have this at the Duke?

Lots of ships bought and built; not a lot looking painted yet. But making gradual progress.

Let me know when and where, but this sounds like a fun place to start.

I have finally completed on my new house today! So my models should be broken out of storage this week, so I can take stock of what I have and start putting a list together.

Should be good to go by the end of the month :D

The Duke should be available (just check the usual 'book a table' thread.

I could still do with a little advise on how best to use Orks. Ramming and/or boarding seem to be really quite tricky.

BFG! BFG! BFG!

I'm going to be out for a couple of Wednesdays, partly due to the UK Games Expo, but could do something over the next couple of weekends or any time starting 7th June basically.

In other news, my uncontrolled spaceship-related spending continues unabated but I've ended up with a few things that I don't really need including a LOT of Cobras and a couple of Battleships. Any interest here?

EDIT: How's Saturday 27th for some gaming?

Looks like there will be three of us down on Saturday now. Would be great to get a fourth, otherwise happy to play some free-for-all or 2v1 games. :)

I was thinking about 12.30ish start?

How many points shall I bring down? Given we have plenty of time we could even do 2k?

I could do a game on Weds. Happy to do a "full size"/normal game, or a few smaller games if we get a few more takers.

Sounds great, do we want to take the opportunity to make up a campaign map and choose campaign fleets as well?

I can't remember if this came up before, but in terms oh house-rules I'd like to nix the +10% ship cost for earned refits. It's just too expensive for a random, and sometimes not very useful, effect.

Fleet is all packed away for 1500pt Escalating Engagement tomorrow. I'll be fielding:

Admiral Apostolov (Ld8, +1 Re Roll)

Sovereign - Dominion class battlecruiser

Challenger - Dictator class cruiser
Pandora - Gothic class cruiser
Centurion - Lunar class cruiser

Hawk - Endeavour class light cruiser
Fortune - Endurance class light cruiser
Pathfinder - Defiant class light cruiser

Arrogant, Adventure & Assurance - Falchion class frigates (Alpha Squadron)
Success, Surprise, Siren & Sentinel - Falchion class frigates (Sigma Squadron)

The plan, leadership rolls permitting, is to squadron up a light cruiser with each regular cruiser. This lets me distribute hits onto the tankier ships and actually put out significant firepower from each squadron. The Falchions kind of feel like worse Swords, but I'll try and combine Torpedo and Bomber waves where possible.

Slight concerns about whether I have too much ordnance to reload as every squadron wants to be able to reload ordnance, but we'll see!

I don't have my exact list on me, but from memory I've gone heavy on launch bays (Emperor BB, Mars BC and Dictator CA), plus some other cruisers (Tyrant and Lunar, I think), and some escorts, which I think were three each of Firestorm and Sword FF. Similarly with a Ld8, +1 Re-roll Admiral. If you've got books/PDF to hand, you'd be able to check whether that adds up or if I've missed something...

No particular plans yet in terms of strategy, although similarly the concept of co-ordinating ordnance strikes sounds wise.

Yep, that's a whole lot of of launch bays! Sounds like I've basically got three light cruisers instead of a battleship. I'm not convinced that one will fall in my favour, but we'll see! Will have to use my manoeuvrability I think given the scenario.

I think it would probably be better for me to have taken a couple of Nova Cannons in the fleet - probably upgrading the Mars and giving one to the Lunar (or replacing with a Dominator). Still, this is what joint exercises are for. ;)

Game ended up being quite exciting, swinging back and forth a fair bit!

Notable events were a chain reaction of capital ships causing the placement of no less than 17 blast markers from a single die of battery fire, the Emperor Battleship getting bogged down in a veritable field of blast markers, effectively taking its shields down permanently and the only crit caused in the entire game being a Bridge Smashed on Alex's admiral...

In the end, I lost my Lunar, Gothic and my escorts were destroyed or disengaged but was otherwise in good shape whereas Alex was down to a Dictator and a rather out of position Lunar. Very interesting game!

I particularly enjoyed the Escalating Engagement scenario - good fun, although I think we were both helped by the fact that our ships came on in relatively close co-ordination. If my Emperor had arrived on the far short table edge, things could have looked very different...

The double reactor explosion was certainly interesting; I was sure that when you brought two ships on on my six that that flank was finished, but a combination of a lucky Nova Cannon shot and some wild dice rolls meant it ended up as a stalemate. I still don't think I've quite got a grip on using some of my fleet to full effect, but yesterday was certainly a good tactical exercise in the use of launch bays.

I think all of your fleet did very well, but for me your absolute heroes were the Falchion squadrons. 3 batteries and 1 torp seems like a nice combination, and they certainly did good work in hunting down and crippling my Mars.
